Rooted in the lush cultural landscapes of Agartala, Tripura, Abhijit Das (Deb) discovered his devotion to classical dance at an early age, setting out on a dedicated pursuit that would eventually carry him across Eastern India's major artistic hubs. Drawn to the architectural grace and rhythmic complexity of Odissi, he immersed himself in the revered lineage of Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, refining his technique through rigorous parampara training under Guru Arnab Bandopadhyay of Darpani and absorbing the aesthetic mentorship of Guru Bichitrananda Swain. Through these formative years of discipline, his movement style evolved into a balance of lyrical tribhangi postures, crisp rhythmic footwork, and deeply evocative abhinaya.
Over more than a decade and a half of practice, Abhijit’s artistry expanded from solo performance into ensemble choreography and interdisciplinary dialogue. His stage journey spans traditional presentations of Jayadeva’s Gita Govinda and monumental centenary tributes such as Darpani’s Mardala Manjeera showcase at Kolkata’s Gyan Manch, through to cross-cultural collaborations in Beijing, China, where he explored resonances between Odissi’s sculptural geometry and Chinese classical movement traditions.
Recognizing that the longevity of classical dance rests upon structured pedagogy and holistic artistic development, Abhijit founded PURNANGA The Odissi Research Foundation in Bhubaneswar. Here, he acts both as performer and guru, shaping an institutional vision that treats Odissi not merely as stage repertoire, but as a living science rooted in traditional Indian aesthetic scriptures. Under his guidance, PURNANGA has documented beginner training courses, foundational step classifications, and body conditioning routines synchronized with Mardala tala systems. Uniquely bridging the performing and plastic arts, he integrates canvas and sand painting into the learning environment, allowing young dancers to grasp the visual essence behind Odissi’s fluid lines and cultivating a well-rounded artistic consciousness for the next generation
