    Father of Odissi Mardala

Banamali Maharana was an Odissi music guru and master Mardala percussionist, rather than a classical dancer.

    About

Banamali Maharana was an Odissi music guru and master Mardala percussionist, rather than a classical dancer. Born on 1941-05-16 in Raghurajpur, Puri district, Odisha, he showed an early aptitude for rhythm and initially learned Khol and Dholak through exposure to the Raslila tradition associated with Mohan Sundar Dev Goswami. His formal musical training developed at Annapurna Theatre, where he studied Tabla and Mardala under Singhari Shyamsundar Kar and Kshetramohan Kar.

His artistic work with Kelucharan Mohapatra was pivotal. Under Kelucharan Mohapatra's guidance and inspiration, Maharana developed, codified, and systematized an Odissi Mardala idiom for music and dance. He is widely credited with helping establish Mardala as an independent solo percussion instrument while retaining its central role in Odissi dance accompaniment.

Maharana taught first at Kala Vikash Kendra, Cuttack, and subsequently at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Bhubaneswar, where he served until retirement in 1999. At Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya he prepared the curriculum for a seven-year Mardala course leading to a postgraduate diploma. He accompanied major Odissi artists in India and abroad, including Sanjukta Panigrahi, Priyambada Mohanty-Hejmadi, Sonal Mansingh, and Madhavi Mudgal, and also accompanied vocalists including Balakrishna Das, Bhubaneswar Misra, and Raghunath Panigrahi.

His legacy endures through his disciples, his Mardala Academy, and the Mardala repertoire and pedagogy he developed. He died in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on 2018-11-17. Because he is deceased, he has no current performing activities.
