Gayatri Ranbir

Gayatri Ranbir is an Odissi soloist and repertory artiste associated with Nrutyayan, a leading Odissi institution in Odisha guided by the Deba Prasad Das parampara under the mentorship of Guru Durga Charan Ranbir. Her training reflects the rigorous vocabulary of Odissi—the sculptural chiseling of chauka and the lyrical fluidity of tribhangi—while placing strong emphasis on tala, laya, and the sabda-swara-patha recitation characteristic of the Deba Prasad lineage. At Nrutyayan, she has been groomed in the traditional margam: Mangalacharan, Batu Nritya, Pallavi, Abhinaya, and Moksha, and has performed both as a soloist and as part of the institution’s ensemble in productions that celebrate the aesthetics, music, and dramaturgy of Odissi. Beginning as a young student at Nrutyayan, Gayatri’s journey has been shaped by close guidance, daily riyaaz, and immersion in the philosophy of abhinaya rooted in Odia literature and the Gita Govinda. Within the repertory, she is noted for a clear sense of tala and precise taiyari (technical readiness), complemented by sensitive abhinaya. As her responsibilities grew, she began assisting with rehearsals and mentoring junior students, reflecting Nrutyayan’s emphasis on rigorous pedagogy and the guru-shishya ethos. She has also taken part in institutional lecture-demonstrations that introduce school and college audiences to Odissi’s history, body-technique, and music framework. Stylistically, Gayatri’s work aligns with the Deba Prasad Das gharana—marked by dynamic rhythmic play, choreography that often engages with tribal/folk-inflected motifs native to Odisha, and a distinctive approach to pallavi construction and expressional solo items. In ensemble settings, she has contributed to thematic presentations conceived at Nrutyayan, including homage programs to the lineage and seasonal showcases. Beyond performance, she supports outreach and orientation sessions for new learners, and occasionally assists in introductory workshops outside Odisha alongside her institutional peers.
