Mukteswar Dance Festival
Where Odissi meets the living grandeur of Kalinga temple heritage
About the Festival
The Mukteswar Dance Festival is a three-day annual classical-dance festival staged at the Mukteswar Temple in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Centred on Odissi, it places performances by acclaimed artists within the temple’s open-air heritage setting, linking Odisha’s dance tradition with its renowned sculptural and architectural legacy.
The festival was first held in 1984. Government tourism and city-information sources record that it has been presented annually since 2004, establishing it as a longstanding January fixture in Bhubaneswar’s cultural calendar. Mukteswar Temple—an important 10th-century Shaiva monument in Bhubaneswar—provides the festival’s defining setting. Its temple precincts become an evening performance space, where Odissi’s sculptural poses, abhinaya and rhythmic vocabulary are viewed against the monument’s intricate Kalinga architecture. Odissi is the principal focus of the festival. Official documentation for the 2021 edition records solo, duet and group Odissi presentations, while the 2026 Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi call for participation specifically invited Odissi artists; the festival therefore functions as a significant public platform for professional Odissi performers and ensembles. The festival has been organised through Odisha’s public cultural-tourism institutions. Earlier editions were presented by Odisha Tourism in association with the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi, while the January 23–25, 2026 edition was organised by the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department, Government of Odisha, in association with the Akademi. This institutional support connects dance presentation with the promotion of Bhubaneswar’s archaeological heritage and cultural tourism.
