Sanjukta Panigrahi was a legendary Indian classical dancer and the foremost exponent of Odissi dance in the 20th century. Born in Berhampur to a traditional Brahmin family of Odisha, she showed an intuitive inclination toward dance from childhood, dancing spontaneously to any rhythmic sound. Her mother, from Baripada, belonged to a family that had been patronizing Chhau folk dance for generations. Sanjukta was the first Odia woman to embrace Odissi classical dance at a young age, playing a crucial role in its grand revival. She trained under the legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and became one of his most distinguished disciples. Her performances were marked by extraordinary grace, technical precision, and spiritual depth that captivated audiences worldwide. Throughout her career, she performed extensively across India and internationally as part of government cultural delegations to countries including the United States, Philippines (1969), United Kingdom, and many others. Her artistry and dedication elevated Odissi to international prominence and inspired countless dancers to take up this ancient classical form.
