Sujata Mohapatra is a distinguished Odissi dancer and one of the foremost exponents of the art form in contemporary times. Born in Balasore, Odisha, in 1968, she was raised in a culture deeply rooted in devotion to Lord Jagannatha. From the tender age of four, supported by her mother Srimati Kumudini Mohanty (who was also a music and dance teacher), Sujata began her dance training at Nrutya Sangeeta Kala Mandir in Balasore.
Her early training under Guru Sudhakar Sahu and later under Guru Raghunath Datta provided her with a strong foundation. However, her life's true transformation began in 1987 when she came to Bhubaneswar to train under the legendary Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra at the Odissi Research Center. Under Guruji's expert guidance, Sujata's dance evolved from mere technique to a profound expression of devotion and artistry.
In 1997, Sujata's relationship with her guru deepened when she married Ratikant Mohapatra, the only son of Kelucharan Mohapatra, becoming his daughter-in-law. This sacred relationship further strengthened her commitment to preserving and propagating her guru's distinctive style and choreographic legacy.
Sujata Mohapatra holds a Master's degree in Oriya Literature from Utkal University and received an honorary doctorate in dance from Fakir Mohan University in 2023. She serves as the Principal of Srjan (Odissi Nrityabasa), the premier Odissi dance institution founded by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. Her compelling stage presence, technical precision, and emotional depth have earned her acclaim from audiences and critics worldwide.
Sujata Mohapatra's legacy lies in her unwavering commitment to preserving and propagating the pure Odissi dance form as taught by her guru, Padma Vibhushan Kelucharan Mohapatra. As the daughter-in-law and senior disciple of the legendary guru, she carries the profound responsibility of maintaining the authenticity and devotional essence of his choreographic tradition.
Her contribution extends beyond performance excellence. As Principal of Srjan, one of the world's premier Odissi institutions, she ensures that Kelucharan Mohapatra's unique style, choreographies, and pedagogical approach are transmitted intact to future generations. Her teaching methodology emphasizes not just technical precision but the devotional mood (bhava) that transforms dance into spiritual practice.
Sujata has dedicated her life to upholding the parampara (tradition) with sincerity, honesty, and love for the culture. Her performances of Guruji's unparalleled choreographies, as well as the brilliant compositions of her husband Ratikant Mohapatra, serve as living documentation of the Kelucharan Mohapatra school of Odissi. Through her international workshops and performances, she has taken authentic Odissi to dancers and audiences worldwide.
Her family's multigenerational commitment to Odissi—from her mother-in-law Lakshmipriya Devi (the first woman to perform Odissi publicly on stage) to her daughter Preetisha Mohapatra—exemplifies the living tradition of guru-shishya parampara. Sujata's message to younger dancers emphasizes love for the guru, love for the art, and love for the tradition as the foundation for keeping the parampara alive.
Through her artistry, teaching, and institutional leadership, Sujata Mohapatra ensures that the devotional essence and technical brilliance of Odissi dance, as envisioned by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, continues to flourish and inspire dancers around the world.
