Konark Dance Festival
Where Sculptures Come Alive in Dance and Rhythm
About the Festival
Odisha Tourism’s flagship 5-day national classical dance festival held annually from December 1–5 at the open-air auditorium with the illuminated 13th-century Konark Sun Temple as its majestic backdrop.
Originally envisioned by legendary Odissi maestro Guru Gangadhar Pradhan and formally institutionalized by Odisha Tourism in 1989, the Konark Festival has grown into one of India’s most celebrated open-air classical dance extravaganzas. Staged every evening from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM against the amber-floodlit backdrop of the 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage Konark Sun Temple, the festival creates an aesthetic bridge between the sculptures of the ancient Natyamandir and living classical art traditions.
The five-day festival showcases premier exponents and troupes across India's classical dance spectrum—including Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, and Manipuri. Running in tandem with the International Sand Art Festival at nearby Chandrabhaga Beach, craft bazaars, and culinary trails, it anchors Odisha's peak heritage tourism season.
