Konark Dance & Music Festival
Turning Stone into Living Rhythm: A Gurukul Celebration of Dance & Music
About the Festival
Founded in 1986 by Padmashree Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, this premier 5-day annual festival is held every year from February 19 to 23 at Konark Natya Mandap, celebrating classical dance, Hindustani & Carnatic music, Gotipua, and traditional arts within a living replica of the Sun Temple's ancient Natyasala.
The Konark Dance & Music Festival was conceived and founded in 1986 by the revered Odissi guru and mardal wizard, Padmashree Guru Gangadhar Pradhan. Spurred by the dream to "turn the stone Konark into a living and vibrant Konark," Guruji established the Konark Natya Mandap (KNM) amidst groves of cashew and casuarina dunes as an architectural and spiritual replica of the 13th-century Sun Temple's historic dancing hall (Natyasala).
Serving as the harbinger of contemporary cultural festivals in Odisha, this gathering bridges temple heritage and living performance under the Guru-Shishya Parampara. Unlike single-discipline events, it gives equal prominence to classical dance (Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi), classical vocal traditions, instrumental music, Gotipua, and folk forms.
The festival also confers two prestigious cultural honors:
- Guru Gangadhar Pradhan Lifetime Achievement Award (bestowed upon legends including Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Zakir Hussain, and Dr. Vyjayanthimala Bali)
- Sanjukta Panigrahi / Birla Prativa Sanman (recognizing outstanding young virtuosos)
