Kataka Natyotsav
A stage for young talent. A celebration of theatre. A journey from campuses to the grand stage of Baliyatra.
About the Festival
An inter-college theatre festival in Cuttack, Odisha, celebrating young talent, dramatic excellence, and the journey from campus stages to the grand Baliyatra ground.
Kataka Natyotsav is a premier collegiate theatre festival hosted in the historic silver city of Kataka, Odisha. The event is driven by passionate campus theatre societies and student performing arts groups who are coming together to showcase high-caliber stage productions. By bringing competitive youth theatre out of isolated campus halls and into prominent local landmarks, the festival establishes a professional environment where next-generation playwrights, directors, actors, and technicians can collaborate, test their creative boundaries, and refine their craft. The core purpose behind organizing Kataka Natyotsav is to revive regional public engagement with student theater, preserve Odisha’s rich dramatic heritage, and bridge the gap between amateur college artists and mainstream cultural audiences. Recognizing a lack of large-scale competitive avenues for young dramatists, the festival acts as an active talent incubator. It empowers youth by providing them with visibility, critique from industry veterans, and a launchpad that directly connects collegiate efforts to massive, historic public platforms. The event is meticulously organized through a multi-tiered, elimination-based competitive framework designed to evaluate and elevate structural storytelling. The performance roadmap is divided into a sequential three-part structure: 1. Preliminary Rounds: Typically held in late September (e.g., September 24–30) at Netaji Sanskriti Bhawan, Kataka. This stage focuses on initial regional screening where all registered college teams debut their plays before a preliminary panel of judges. 2. Semi-Finals: Usually scheduled for late October (e.g., October 28–30) at the iconic Seven Pillars of Ravenshaw University. The highest-scoring teams advance to this historic academic and cultural hub to battle for a spot in the final showcase. 3. Grand Prize Showcase: Culminates during the winter cultural season on the historic, massive open-air Baliyatra Ground. The ultimate champion team transitions from their campus roots to perform live before hundreds of thousands of festival-goers. Kataka Natyotsav originally started its journey with its inaugural Edition 1 (Ed-1), which laid down the essential structural roadmap, operational rules, and network connections across local inter-campus dramatic circles. The festival is presented and managed by the cultural curators behind "The Kataka," who collaborate directly with local administrative bodies, senior theatre veterans, and academic institutions to ensure seamless execution, secure institutional support, and provide an authentic, celebratory stage for youth, theatre, and culture.
